Dr. Afeltra has several areas of speciality including Family Medicine, Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases and Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Afeltra received his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1980 and was later awarded a master’s degree in Emergency Medicine at the same university in 2014. In 1986, he received his diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene again from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1987, Dr. Afeltra received a diploma in Primary Emergency Care, a membership in the Faculty of General Practice in 1989 and a diploma in Paediatrics in 1990, all from the College of Medicine of South Africa. Later in 2017, he received a Fellowship in Family Medicine from the College of Family Physicians.
Dr. Afeltra completed his medical training in Johannesburg at the Johannesburg Hospital, South Africa, where he treated patients and developed expertise in managing conditions ranging from Internal Medicine, Surgery, ICU, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Paediatrics Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as surgical specialities in Ophthalmology, ENT and Anaesthetics.
Dr. Afeltra has over 38 years of clinical experience. Before joining United Family Healthcare Shanghai Service Area, he served in several hospitals as a Specialist Emergency Physician, participated in Helicopter Emergency Services in conflict-stricken Mali, worked on one of the biggest and busiest American cruise liners, served in 12 African countries, worked in the United Kingdom and Canada, and served as physician to three African presidents, a number of ministers, deputy ministers, diplomats and ambassadors.
Dr. Afeltra is a member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa and General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.
